Why is it that paying for a soda with nickels and dimes doesn't actually feel like real money?

cuz nickels and dimes arnt real money...wait...shoooot. but seriously nickels dimes and pennies just go into the big jar and every once in a while you take them to the bank and sell them back for cash. its great!! ('sell' seems much more appropriate than 'exchange')
