Cologne, Part 2

I've been doing blind smell tests all day. I'm beginning to think it's deodorant.

Also, Ikea sells 50 cent hot dogs (another way to win my heart).

Does this make me cheap?

did you change deodorants?

did you go to Ikea today? I hear they are selling all their wrapping paper for 99 cents and not going to carry it anymore. I am trying to figure out how to justify driving out there, but the cost of gas would make it way more than 99 cents. So, if you haven't gone, and you do, would you pick me up some wrapping paper?! And any one else that happens to read this and goes to Ikea, and wants to buy me wrapping paper, then, I will be your new best friend! :-) Can you tell I love their paper!

Noooooo----I'm beginning to think my quest for the most amazing men's cologne is, perhaps, a case of certain men's over-indulgence of deodorant lathering.

Yes, I went today, but I didn't see the wrapping paper (the place is a madhouse).

I hope you're not referring to Christmas wrapping paper, but I firmly believe it should have a color scheme that coordinates with your tree and house decorations. And if you are referring to generic wrapping paper, it should match the gift. Therefore, pre-purchasing is an exercise in decorative futility!

Yes, it could be deodorant, but I will say that Jason smells good and his deodorant is unscented, and he doesn't wear cologne. For him, it is his shaving cream. Great smell!

And i am not referring to christmas paper...but my, oh my, that is quite the little system you have set up for yourself with paper. I'm lucky if I remember to get a gift for someone, much more be so detailed about the wrapping.

Karin, I’m confused. If your quest to discover the holy grail of cologne leads you to a men’s deodorant product, why will you feel cheated? Was there something mystical about the scent’s coming, specifically, from cologne? Why would deodorant (etc.) be somehow lesser?

I think because cologne is the finishing product, the very essence of manliness that a fella uses to represent everything about themselves. Good smelling cologne invokes an air of romance while deodorant is merely a necessity. Good smelling deodorant is what cheap men use in the hopes that women won't notice their efforts in avoiding the purchasing of cologne. The antithesis of romance ;)

Cindy Lynn, your comment was going to be compelling...right until the point when you associated romance with dollar signs. I think I feel cheapened as a result.

Frankly, my boyfriend smells amazing without cologne and fancy deodorant... he is just yummy naturally.

However, I must add that I get offended by men whose (expensive or cheap) scent is so obtrusive as to penetrate my airspace uninvited. Guys... if we can smell you from more than three feet away - it's too strong. (Ladies, if you have to get closer than three feet to smell a guy, you'd better be invited!)

Okay, okay. I wasn’t going to do this, but I’ll go ahead and out myself right now. I wear cheap hot dog-scented deodorant. A lot of it.

Oh now now...let me seek some vindication. I would never REALLY associate romance with dollar signs. In truth, if a fella was wonderful and smelled so great that I wanted to be invited into his surrounding 3' of personal space, it would not matter if the source was from cologne or deodorant ;)

I understand Ikea makes use of their wood dust by working it into the hotdogs. This allows them to keep prices down on both products.

And so you have it. A little extra catsup and you'll never notice.

Wow… deodorant & hot dogs, I too love them both.

A friend of mine (who I was sharing your man smell blog with) made a very interesting point. The very same cologne will smell very different on different men. And to that end, having a blind sniff test at a department store counter, you may not even recognize the cologne that so infatuated you previously. (In her words "my son put on my husband's cologne and smelled like a dog's butt, but my husband puts it on and smells great") I think you should take the opportunity to ask when you smell it on someone and then go to the store and see if it still smells as wonderful or even how you remembered by itself.
